GGIA Task List - February 27, 2003, Committee Meeting

 
Governmental/Environmental Committee

1.  Meeting with Governor Purdue

2.  Outreach other environmental groups for research

Invasive Plants Committee

1.  Form Task Force

2.  Outreach with the group at the State Botanical Garden for research

3.  Reach out for more volunteers

4.  Arrange committee meeting to discuss the various exotic pest plant lists and how GGIA can work with other organizations

Marketing Committee

1.  Encourage growers to utilize the Georgia Grown tags and incorporate the Georgia Grown logo into

any scheduled advertising for spring.

2.  Encourage Walter Reeves and Richard Ludwig to plug the Georgia Grown program on their individual

shows.

3.  Design the GGIA booth for the SNA convention.  Brenden Smith is contact person on this project.

4.  Seek out donors for T-shirts outlining the "Top Ten Reasons for being a GGIA Member"

5.  Have finalized details for the May Board Meeting. (May 15, 2003; Tifton, GA

6.  Discuss how to obtain goal of 100 new members this year for GGIA.  Form a plan for the

membership blitz and finalize the new membership brochure.

7.  Target the Greenville/Spartanburg area for the 2004 WinterGREEN/WinterSCHOOL Tradeshow. 

Incorporate more links to the website for the other organizations and put together one-page recaps of meetings attended by the Board Members representing GGIA.

Tradeshow Committee

1.  Joe Napoli to write one article for each journal discussing the show, exhibitor services, proposed

new activities and educational opportunities.

2.  Research the possibilities of individual company sponsorship of "How-to" clinics to generate revenue

for GGIA.

3.  Schedule meetings to outreach with the Georgia Master Gardener's Association to see if there is a

possibility of combining events and generating more revenue for both groups.

Landscape Certification Committee

1.  John Strickland to contact new local association in the coastal area and to follow-up to see if

there is promotion opportunities for the test with the new group.

2.  Network with MALTA to see if they will host training for the GCLP exam.

3.  Assemble a task force to discuss whether the exam will continue to be industry-driven or if the

association should work to have the exam state-sanctioned.

Certified Plant Professional Test Committee

1.  Determine the need for state sanctioning or state "stamp of approval"

2.  Address marketing concerns regarding the GCPP exam.

Education Committee

1.  Continue to work on patterning the 2004 educational event after the 2003 successful educational

events.

2.  Research the Keynote address to include invasive plants.

3.  Research the possibility of a session about starting a nursery business for people interested in

getting into the business.

4.  Find sponsors and presenters for "How-to" clinics to be presented on the Tradeshow floor in 2004.

5.  Finalize the education schedule for the May board meeting.

Awards Committee

1.  Review the brochures from 2003 and make the necessary changes for the 2004 award program.

2.  Include the addition of a new award entitled "Innovator of the Year Award" and outline the

guidelines.

3.  Finalize the brochures earlier so GGIA staff can mail out earlier and the board can have more time

to make its decision.

4.  Compile a listing of former award winners to be listed on the individual award nomination form.

Scholarship Subcommittee

1.  Continue to brainstorm on ways to enlarge the scholarship program.  Look into a multi-level

donation program.  If adopted, compose a short paragraph to go on all GGIA printed material. 

2.  Research the possibility of a fund-raising drive for the scholarship fund and combine it with the

membership drive.  Also discuss the possibility of targeting non-green industry groups.

Landscape Division

1.  Discuss the merits of having a two-tiered certification program that would include a designation of

"Landscape Technician" as well as the current "Certified Landscape Professional" designation.

2.  Make necessary preparations for the hands-on exam to be held in Griffin at the Research and 

Education Garden.

Wholesale Division
Maintain dialog with Sherry Loudermilk on the No Fee Cap issue regarding nursery licenses.  Determine whether representation at the March 25 hearing at the Department of Agriculture will be necessary, and if so who will represent GGIA.
Retail Division

1.  Report on the meeting with the Master Gardeners to see if partnering is going to be feasible and/or

profitable for both.

2.  Research touring two retail garden centers and round-table discussion following lunch and present

a plan.

Sales & Marketing Division

1.  Continue Golf Tournament preparations.

2.  Work with government entities to apply for outreach funds.
