Hoke Smith Dedication a Big Hit

A gloomy and constant rain couldn't dampen the spirits at Hoke Smith as GGIA joined with representatives from UGA to recognize those in the industry who helped make this beautiful landscape possible.

The day kicked off with the UGA Horticulture Farm Open House. And although the rain fell steady there too, a good crowd braved the conditions to hear about the innovative research taking place at the farm on topics ranging from new plants to sustainable, low input growing in high tunnels.

We were joined at the farm by Representatives Tom McCall, Terry England and Chuck Williams who showed that their role on the House Ag Committee isn't just for show as they rolled up their sleeves to help bring an antique tractor back to life that had not been cranked in years. Special thanks to Dr. Doug Bailey and Matthew Chappell for welcoming these leaders to the farm and showing them that money appropriated to the college and horticulture is money well invested.

Following lunch, we joined with over 50 supporters including Associate Dean Laura Perry Johnson and Senate Ag Chairman John Wilkinson to dedicate the landscape at Hoke Smith. Dean Johnson spoke about the history of the building and thanked all of the participants while House Appropriations Chair England spoke about the power of partnerships between Cooperative Extension and the Green Industry.

Thanks to the UGA Hort Club, 60 fresh yards of mulch from Cowart Mulch was spread to complete the project and the end results were truly top notch. GGIA was presented with a plaque placed at the foot of the steps thanking the industry for the contribution that now gives Cooperative Extension a landscape that not only transforms the grounds at Hoke Smith but will serve as living classroom and reminder of the strong relationship that we enjoy with UGA.

We invite you to visit the garden on your next trip to Athens to see for yourself just how generous the donors and volunteers were in order to make this project a reality. And please allow us to say one final word of thanks to all of our members who graciously gave to the cause!
