GGIA Wraps Up Hoke-Smith Landscape Project

Thanks to the help from dozens of volunteers and contributions from numerous industry members, the GGIA landscape project at UGA’s Hoke-Smith building was completed last Friday. Hoke-Smith is the home of Cooperative Extension at UGA and houses many of the agents and specialists that work with our industry on a daily basis. The building enjoys a high visibility location on the corner of Lumpkin and Carlton Street just past the UGA Track and Butts Mehre Building.

The landscape, last updated in the 1980’s, needed some work and GGIA and our members decided that we could help in order to show our support for Cooperative Extension and the invaluable services they provide for the industry. The landscape presented us with a blank slate and Ron Deal from Gardens South went to work developing a plan that would highlight many plants with UGA and Georgia pedigrees.

In the end, over 900 plants, one gallon and larger, were installed along with thousands of  smaller containers of groundcovers, 3600 sq feet of sod, two truckloads of soil amendment and 100 cubic yards of mulch. The landscape is watered with a state of the art, high efficiency irrigation system from Toro Irrigation who provided all of the irrigation parts and supplies.

Volunteers from FFA and 4H groups joined with GGIA members, UGA faculty and staff and friends from the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. The number of man hours needed to complete the project was immense but special thanks goes out to Dr. Matthew Chappell, Dr. Todd Hurt, Ron Deal  and Jeff Fischer from FIS Outdoors who were with us start to finish throughout the week. Associate Dean Laura Perry Johnson and Horticulture Department Head Doug Bailey even joined in for some “horticulture therapy”.

GGIA would like to sincerely thank all of the volunteers and donors who helped make this dream a reality. The landscape at Hoke-Smith will provide years of beauty and function for the thousands of people who drive by the building on a daily basis and will serve as a showcase for horticulture in Georgia. It would not have been possible without the generosity and the talents of many. Thank You!

We will soon be announcing a date for the dedication of the garden and hope that our volunteers and donors will be able to join us. In the meantime, please enjoy these pictures of the project and help us express our appreciation for those who made the project possible.
