Dr. Michael A. Dirr was formally inducted into the Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame on Friday, March 20, 2026, during a ceremony hosted by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences—an honor recognizing individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to agriculture and agribusiness in Georgia.
Dr. Dirr, Professor Emeritus of Horticulture at the University of Georgia, has had a profound and lasting impact on the green industry through his teaching, research, and leadership. Over the course of his career, he has influenced generations of students and industry professionals, helping shape not only plant knowledge, but a deep appreciation for horticulture and its role in our communities.

While widely known for his teaching and publications, including Dirr’s Manual of Woody Landscape Plants, his contributions to plant development—particularly through hydrangea breeding—have left a meaningful mark on both the industry and the University of Georgia. His work developing the Endless Summer hydrangea and subsequent cultivars introduced innovations that expanded bloom potential and market opportunity, while also generating royalty streams that have supported ongoing research and industry advancement for many years.
That commitment to practical, real-world impact was also reflected in his work alongside Skeetter McCorkle to establish the Center for Applied Nursery Research—an effort focused on delivering timely, applicable research directly to the nursery and landscape industry. In his remarks, Dr. Dirr also reflected on the shared vision he and Vince Dooley helped advance, which contributed to the University of Georgia campus being designated as an arboretum—an enduring feature that continues to shape both the university and the broader horticulture community.
The induction ceremony brought together many of Dr. Dirr’s former students, colleagues, and industry leaders, including GGIA members, to recognize the impact of his work. GGIA Executive Director Lanie Riner was in attendance alongside several members to celebrate this well-deserved recognition.
As part of this honor, Dr. Dirr’s recognition will be permanently displayed at UGA’s Four Towers Building, where Georgia Agricultural Hall of Fame inductees are recognized for their lasting contributions to the state’s agricultural community.
Dr. Dirr’s influence is reflected across Georgia’s nursery, greenhouse, and landscape sectors, and we are proud to see his contributions recognized through this distinction.
